THE BUG & WARRIOR QUEEN [UK/JAM]

The Bug aka Ladybug or Kevin Martin has told us the following: ”I make music because it changed my life. I make music that has fire. I make music that are filled with intensity and extremity. There are no innocent listeners. In my ipod you find Al Green.” However the last bit is out of place. A bit feverish. (JPEG) From his base in London The Bug produces music with influences from dancehall, grime and hip hop. Somtimes even dubstep, dubtronicka and broken techno such as Basic Channel and Pole play parts in his more suppressed influences. This is an artist that has delivered 7’s, 12’s and LP’s during more than a decade for record companies such as Wordsound, Rephlex, Soul Jazz Records, Tigerbeat6, Hyperdub and Ninja Tunes. But a Bug project is also distinguished by co-operation with vocalists and MC’s such as Cutty Ranks, Flow Dan, Ras B and Rootsman. His companion in Göteborg will be Warrior Queen from Jamaica.

Together with her partner Warrior Queen has created a whole new genre: industrial dancehall. It is a style that lacks precursors in Jamaica as well as in Europe. Here is the rawness that we find in dub step combined with a sharp phrase turnings of a true warrior queen. In a short autobiography on her myspace she writes: ”Now, its hot, burning hot, sun from that moment of birth, I was blessed, blessed with this musical voice, talent to write from the Almighty Father, for real!”. We are bound to agree. Her childhood years has all been about music. Her uncle had a sound system and a record store. She plugged a mic in and then started chanting. Within seconds the shops interior and exterior would turn into Reggae Sunsplash. One day when she was chanting to the flip side of a record someone approached her friend and asked, "Who is that girl? She sounds wicked". From that day on she has been side by side with Jamaican artists like sister charm and Pablo Mellow. Dj Mleccha
