SUB SWARA [US]
Dhruva & Sharmaji hail from NYC’s Sub Swara crew—genre-bending purveyors of Low-frequency/Hi-vibration culture who create a trademark dancefloor vibe that unites across cultural and musical boundaries. Drawing on the freshest elements of dubstep, bashment, dancehall, jungle, breaks, and nu-school bhangra, augmented with live dubbed-out percussion, the duo has quickly gained an international reputation for blistering live sets and next level original productions.
Their confluence of deep, organic sounds and serious bass weight have garnered Dhruva & Sharmaji accolades from the luminaries of underground music, including a guest mix on the Mary Anne Hobbs show on BBC Radio 1 (voted one of the year’s best on her show), consistent top-5 status on the BBC Asian Network, and placement in the Dubwar and Hospital Records podcasts. Their tune "Koli Stance," soon to be released on Sharmaji’s new imprint Low Motion records (co-run by Secret Agent Gel) was called " a master class in swirling subcontinental tablas and warping dubstep bass" by perennial tastemaker, Pitchfork Media.
Individually and together, they’ve headlined at premiere gigs like Francois K’s Deep Space, Dub War, Direct Drive, Surya Dub, and around the world from Toronto to Mumbai, while the entire Sub Swara crew has performed at Temple of the Breaks @ Burning Man, Canada’s Shambhala Music festival, and the VH1 New Years party in Goa. Sub Swara’s 2-years-and-running club night has presented the best in cross-genre dancefloor-slaying artists, including the GliTCH Mob, Freq Nasty, Bassnectar, Stereotyp, Ghislain Poirer and State of Bengal.
This year will see the debut of the Sub Swara LP (summer 2008), as well as their trans-continental tune "Backwater Dub" on the Agriculture imprint, a feature on DJ Spooky’s label, and more from Low Motion. Stay tuned!
