a sonic chickpea at the roof top
We left a message on Micropixie’s website and hoped she would get in touch. A few days passed and then we received the first mail signed "MPX". Then, with the latest letter of our long correspondence, she sent us a package of Micropixie Condom Minimum’s "for guys with big things in mind...", which also displayed the comment "good things should always come in small packages".
So to summarise: Made in Bombay (now Mumbai), born and raised in the UK, and currently based in San Francisco after a long stay in Paris and, more recently, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), micropixie is the alien alter ego of writer filmmaker and full-time human Single Beige Female.
Musically, it’s not easy to put Micropixie into any specific category. She calls herself an "alien with extraORDINARY abilities" and her debut album ”Alice in Stevie Wonderland” is a mystical story of an alien that comes to our planet to try on the human experience. Micropixie takes us with her on a journey that investigates emotions, doubts, disappointments, affirmation and ends via an explanation of love - all this with an acute sense of humour and a political message.
"The twelve songs cover a lot of different genres. And on them I speak of many issues that affect this particular Single Beige Female’s heart and mind; sexism, racism, identity, conformity, mind control, relationships, solitude, politics, religion, truth, faith, and my personal favourite, hope."
This is Micropixie’s description of her own music which does indeed carry all this but without branding slogans or any kind of aggressiveness. The sound is very laid-back and you get the feeling of lounge music: a gentle electronica with light tones that are accompanied by spoken word and soft song textures.
Micropixie and her inseparable friend neo eon one sample everything from tabla to pujabells. But the result is never confusing or messy. Neo was involved in writing and producing the album, but on the Clandestino stage MPX will perform with the tabla player Renu Hossain.
"I’m unsigned, without a manager, booking agent or promo office... at the moment it’s almost 100% me, although Neo helps out if he has time. To be honest, this is all new to me", she explains. "But despite the fact that there is only one little alien on the MPX team, the album has already received good international media attention. And it has been amazing to perform. The reaction has been incredible. People say it is a unique sound, and inspiring."
The condoms she sent to the office were microscopically small. Just able to fit on a man’s little finger... It’s not only her sound that is unique.
