MAGA BO
[BRAZIL]
Deep inside the mountain it will be a fusion of echo and rumble sounds. Hip hop beats will be mixed with ragga, breakbeat and jungle.
We are overwhelmed to present this DJ and producer who gets inspired by sounds that pass, that are forgotten and considered obsolete. Maga Bo, resident on Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, gives life to traditional music through his enthusiasm and fantasy. The sound has its roots in batacuda (a samba genre), rai (arosed in Algeria during the 40’s and is a combination between local music and Spanish-Andalusian music and jazz), capoeira (martial arts/dance) and bhangra (Indian folk music, originally from Punjab). All music is mixed with samples from the streets; modified rhythms from Brazil, Morocco, Senegal, and India and beyond these borders.
Fragile bows meets heavily vibrating bass in the confusion of the tongues
Maga Bo started with vinyl and CD but passed to lap top to be able to use the new technology. His live recordings are based on different techniques and tools: pirate video cassettes bought on streets around the world, MP3’s from the Internet, rare vinyl’s found in underground stores in São Paulo, original programmed beats, exclusive recordings with musicians and faded genres like kwaito (house inspired music in lower tempo with its roots in Johannesburg) and grime (a mix between British garage, hip hop and drum’n’bass).
The latest album Confusion of Tongues was released on Soot Records 2007 and includes tracks with Filastine in the common project Sonar Calibrado. Apart from producing and spinning records, Maga Bo also works with other projects. He makes soundtracks and preliminary research to documentaries with connection to politics and social issues.
Cave-man or cave king, Maga Bo is going to rule the underground cave, Berg 211, during the late hours on this Thursday night.
