Dj Missill

THE BULLETSPEED DJ FROM PARIS

(GIF)

Her friends used to call her Missile because they couldn’t keep up with her fast tempo. The Missile became Missill, dj and grafitti alias for Emily, who after being followed by a madman, stopped giving her family name. Born in the south of France, and living in Paris for years, as a teenager, she started to sneak out at nights with a spray can in her pocket. The graffiti art steered her toward working as a graphic designer and flyer-designing and doing jobs for different clubs, which lured her into working as a DJ. To play records is just one more way of expressing myself. Everything happened gradually. I was lucky and I’m so happy that everything went so well. Now she’s flying all over the world, posing in cool DJ- magazines, and heard on French radio and television with a first release last spring on the DJ-mixed album, Mash Up. Between DJ and graphic art jobs, she’s starting to produce her own music. She has released a lot of bootlegs but Friendlys album Nobody, on Fat! Records, is the first one that Missill has officially remixed. Despite her full schedule, there are never any plans to scale-down any of her many projects.

For me they complete with each other and it’s important to find time for all of them, even if DJ-ing takes up most of my time. I would really like to combine my visuals with my music. I want to do my own 3D animation videos for my songs. I also want to keep working on doing my own live show & videos, remixed for my sets. As well, I would like to produce more and release more Missill-records.

Do you have a DJ that you look up to?

I don’t have a mentor. But if I had to choose a DJ, it would be DJ Shadow because he has all the qualities a DJ could wish for. He is a fantastic producer, he has a fantastic video integrated into his live show, he has an amazing record collection and broad musical knowledge.

Are there any differences between female and male DJs?

For me it’s not about if you are a guy or a girl. To become DJ is possible for anyone but being a good DJ is harder.

What kind of DJ- philosophy do you have?

I want to share my music with the audience, without pretensions. Just have fun, go for it and live within the music.

What are we going to hear at the Clandestino Festival?

I don’t know yet, but I’m sure it will be a remix of all kinds of styles. A dance floor orientated remix with electro, ragga, hiphop, breaks, grime and booty bass, and some crazy fresh bootlegs and remixes! And what can I expect from the audience?
